The name, Simister, seems to have been around perhaps since about the 1500s. Many variations
in the spelling are probably due to individual families adopting a new spelling, or due to hard to
read writing in the records. A case in point is James Somister who is associated with Simister
Village. A James Somister established a farm near Prestwich, Manchester, England. A small
village was named after him, and took on the name of "Simister" village." This village is still in
existence today at the junction of M62 and M66, northwest of Manchester and northeast of
Prestwich. Simister Lane and Simister Green are current ramifications to this area. Perhaps the
original roots of the name may have come from Summaster a person who keeps records, much
like an accountant of today. Other accounts credit the name coming from Seamster one who
sews.
